The intent of St Stephen's Infant School Curriculum
At St Stephen's Infant School we have designed our curriculum with the intent that all pupils will...
receive rich and wide experiences,
be provided with the knowledge and skills to become passionate learners,
be creative,
enjoy learning new skills for life,
feel safe and secure in an environment where they can thrive
be happy and confident to try new things and be brave,
become more independent through opportunities for purposeful play during 'Time to Investigate' in Early Years Foundation Stage and 'Learning Zone,' in Key Stage One,
build on prior learning through sequenced planning,
be encouraged to be the best that they can be!
The golden thread of our curriculum is to:
develop cultural capital,
develop children's citizenship (preparing them for the next stage of their school career)
develop a sense of community - "Together We Shine"
Our curriculum is cohesive and progressive with knowledge and skills that are built upon year on year. We also ensure that our curriculum is flexible to follow the interests of the children and to ensure that we are providing relevant and stimulating opportunities. We offer a curriculum that reflects the context of Canterbury and St Stephen's within the wider world. Through our curriculum we inspire children to develop a love of learning.
At St Stephen's Infant School we understand the importance of providing children with an abundance of opportunities to learn more and make links with their prior learning. By ensuring that children can retreive their knowledge and build on it, children will become confident and independent learners who build on their skills and remember more.
Below are our intent and progression grids for each subject area taught in school.
The school will make provisions to account for parents’ right to withdraw their child from RE lessons.
At St Stephen’s Infant School we follow the Cornerstones Curriculum; a creative and thematic approach to learning that is fully mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum. Following the Cornerstones Curriculum ensures we have comprehensive coverage of the primary national curriculum expectations. Our curriculum ensures that every child has access to rich, relevant and age-appropriate content.
At its heart of the curriculum is a child-centred pedagogy, The Four Cornerstones, which is delivered through two main types of projects:
• Cross-Curricula Projects – exciting, themed projects that spark curiosity, creativity and real-world connections.
• Knowledge Rich Projects – subject-specific projects that emphasise depth, rigour and progression.
Together, these projects form the foundation of our school curriculum and provide a rich menu of engaging and motivating activities that draw meaningful links across subjects.
Over the course of the year, our children are challenged with tasks that require them to solve problems, think creatively, and express their understanding in different ways. Alongside this creative work, our curriculum includes a robust skills and knowledge progression framework, which sets out clear end-of-year expectations for every subject. These expectations are age-related and linked to specific activities, making tracking progress, identifying children’s individual needs, and planning targeted next steps effective and informative.
You can explore examples of the Cornerstones Curriculum projects and learn more about the Four Cornerstones pedagogy on the Cornerstones Education website.
